It was in Biggest Loser's sixth season that we met Phil and Amy Parham, a married couple from South Carolina who had let their weight grow to unhealthy levels under the pressures of managing life. With an autistic son, failing business and many other hurdles life threw their way, the Parhams had become another obesity statistic.
Amy started Biggest Loser at 229 pounds, and would go on to lose 105; Phil's starting weight was 331 pounds, and he would lose 151 pounds. Together, the couple would lose 256 pounds. They remain record holders as the highest percentage of weight lost by any couple in the show's nearly ten-season history.
After the confetti fell and the lights went down at Biggest Loser, the Parhams returned home with a new sense of who they were and what they wanted to do for themselves and their community. They felt compelled to share their new-found knowledge of leading a healthy lifestyle, and thus was born *The 90-Day Fitness Challenge."
It started as a one-day bootcamp lead by the Parhams; an event they organized in just two weeks and had attendance of more than 1,000 people from seven states. During the proceeding 90 days, the Parhams would send daily emails to the participants with fitness tips, diet guidance, motivating messages and more. From those emails comes their first published book, The 90-Day Fitness Challenge. When the participants regrouped 90 days later, they'd lost more than 4,000 pounds collectively.
It's this one-day-at-a-time approach that has helped the Parhams maintain their weight loss nearly two years after Biggest Loser, and has helped so many follow in their footsteps.
In The 90-Day Fitness Challenge, Amy and Phil will guide you through starting and working through your own 90-day weight loss plan, and do so just one day at time. The first few chapters shed more light on their personal story, and then move on to teaching the nuts and bolts of nutrition and fitness that are necessary to find success. You'll even find discussion of their faith and how it helped them, and why they think faith can play a key role in readers' lives, too.
Then, the book moves on to the daily guides, where you'll find motivating messages, more educational guidance, mini challenges and more to help you take on one small change after another and gradually progress to sustainable weight loss.
In addition to the book, the Parhams have released the complementary The 90-Day Fitness Challenge DVD.

When people arrive at the Biggest Loser Ranch, they are immediately thrust into an environment of clean eating. This means the Parhams had to give up sugar, processed foods, chemical additives, non-organic produce and meats, among many other things. While you won't likely implement such strict parameters at home, The 90-Day Fitness Challenge does explain how to change the way you eat and do so in a more sustainable way. They explain good protein, carb and fat sources, why fiber and water are essential, how to eliminate sugar from the diet and healthy alternatives, how to reduce salt, and more. Additionally, they explain how to strike that balance with moderation.
Additionally, you'll learn more about counting calories, reading food labels, portion control and even how to make substitutions (i.e. swapping ice cream for frozen yogurt). These dietary tricks of the trade are important and necessary not only for losing weight, but also maintaining that weight loss.
In The 90-Day Fitness Challenge you'll also find a very thorough shopping list that will ensure you're bringing home everything you need and nothing that you don't.
A week's worth of meal plans help you create a foundation for preparing healthful meals at home. One day might look like this:
- Breakfast: Egg white veggie breakfast burrito
- Snack: Apple with almonds
- Lunch: The Amy Salad
- Snack: String cheese with seasonal fruit
- Dinner: Grilled salmon with sweet potato and asparagus
Finally, a handful of recipes are included, like Black Bean Hummus and Southern Comfort Lime Chicken.
Exercise is a key component of The 90-Day Fitness Challenge. Like other sections of the book, the Parhams do a great job of breaking down fitness to its bare roots, helping you understand why exercise is beneficial, explaining the various forms of exercise like cardio training and weight training, how intense workouts should be, the importance of variety, and more.
The Challenge comes with three written plans, one to follow during each of the three months of the program. The first is for beginners, helping you ease into a routine and find your comfort level. The second plan is gradually more challenging pushing you to try a few new things. The third plan is the most intense, incorporating more weight work and more cardio.
You'll also find mini challenges in the daily updates and a place to record your own fitness journal.
Finally, you can also incorporate The 90-Day Fitness Challenge DVD into your routine. Follow the Parham's lead through this two-disc, 12-session workout routine that will help you to build up your endurance and find a shared love of fitness one 15-minute session at a time.
If you're searching for a weight loss plan that separates from the secular, embraces the Christian faith and has a passionate focus on tackling both the short-term and long-term aspects of healthy weight loss, then The 90-Day Fitness Challenge by former Biggest Loser's Phil and Amy Parham might be a good fit for you. By introducing the basics of both fitness and nutrition, and helping you to gradually introduce these concepts one day at a time, you'll be able to set and reach short-term goals and enjoy healthy, gradual weight loss that is sustainable.
Their friendly, honest and passionate personalities shine throughout the book, offering a sense of losing weight with a friend.
With testimonials showing how the program has worked for so many others, and the continued committal to the lifestyle by Phil and Amy, it's easy to see that this is a program that is doable.
